Originally visitors to Possum Kingdom Lake enjoyed short term stays at the numerous fishing camps. Also back in the day, the shoreline owned by the Brazos River Authority was long-term leased to those who built cottages and cabins on BRA land. These BRA Leaseholders were prohibited from subleasing or giving short term rentals. As a result, PK Lake remained very private for decades. These former BRA Leasehold properties became deeded. The property owners were no longer restricted to rent. Since then, vacation rentals can be found listed on the internet.
However, other lake communities which are gated and have community amenities do not allow short term rentals. Most of these areas were once ranches. Now that these areas have been developed, they have HOA’s that prohibit short term rentals out of concerns for privacy and security of common amenities.
Future lake property owners should be aware that government entities could prohibit vacation rentals in the future, but at this time they can be found and enjoyed. There are also a few overnight accommodations that can be found listed on our Chamber of Commerce website.
